How To Warm Up A Cold Newborn Baby Goat In Trouble

If you ever have a newborn that is fading fast due to not maintaining their body temp (for any reason!), this is a super effective way to raise their body temp steady without shock, but also rather quickly. There is something special about hairdryer heat that really just goes through the body easily. Think about how warm your head gets quickly when you blow dry your hair! :) This is also a fantastic setup for maintaining body temps for those special needs newborns that can't maintain their body temps their first day or two.

These two videos (rolled into one) show two incubators going, same basic setup with a few slight differences. You need something across the top to keep SOME heat in, but also maintaining some level of venting so it doesn't get too hot in there. In all cases ALWAYS put an outdoor thermometer in the tote so you can keep an eye on the temperature in there and either vent more or adjust the heat and/or blower high/low setting to get the temp in there where you need it to be. You definitely don't want it too hot!!! If your kid is panting, its too hot!!!! I like it to be right around 80 degrees in there. Once I have a kid stable and temp where I want it, I have the dryer blower on low, and (at least on my dryer) heat on medium. Depending on your dryer, the size of your tote, the weight and openings of your "vent" cover, will depend what settings you need to have your dryer on. That is why the outdoor thermometer in the tote with the kid is SO important!!!

Do NOT feed colostrum to kids until you have their temp over 100. :)
